3D printed key tags for hotels, guest houses and Airbnbs

Small hotels, guest houses, B&Bs and holiday rentals all have the same problem: keys go missing, and plain key tags look cheap. A set of matching, numbered key tags in the property's colours is a simple upgrade, and it's an order that comes back every time a tag walks off.

For a 3D printing seller, room tags are a good bulk product: one design, a list of numbers, and a buyer who will reorder.

Who buys room and key tags

  • Boutique hotels and guest houses that want tags to match their style.
  • Holiday rental and Airbnb hosts, often with several properties.
  • Hostels, for rooms and lockers.
  • Gyms, pools and clubs, for locker keys.
  • Offices and schools, for cupboards, cabinets and spare keys.
  • Property managers, for labelled key sets for each unit.

Designs to offer

  • Number key tag. A clear number or short code, like "204" or "B12". Large digits read from across a reception desk.
  • Room bar tag. A longer tag with a second line, for a room name and number ("Garden Suite", "Room 3") or a property name.
  • Guest room tags. Decorative shapes with a room number, a second line and an icon, in matching styles. See number and room tags for the full set.

The hotels and guesthouses ideas page has example text for each.

Plan the run with the buyer

Before you quote, agree:

  • Numbers or names. "101 to 120", "Room 1 to Room 12", or named rooms like "Oak", "Ash", "Birch".
  • The second line. The property name, a floor, or nothing. Keep it the same on every tag.
  • Colours. The property's colours, or a contrasting pair like white on navy.
  • Spares. Suggest two of each tag. Keys get lost, and a spare in the drawer saves a reorder.
  • Hole position. Where the ring goes affects how the tag hangs on a board.

Print one sample tag and send a photo, or a picture from the studio, before printing the run.

Turn a list of rooms into files

Ask for the room list in one message, one per line:

101
102
103
Garden Suite

With the STLmint Seller plan, open the design with the agreed colours and second line, choose Bulk order and paste the list. You get a ZIP with one file per room, numbered in list order, ready to load onto the printer. Up to sixty go in one list.

For a numbered run, you can make the list in a spreadsheet in seconds: type the first number, drag down, copy the column and paste.

Make them tough

Key tags get dropped, thrown in bags and left in hot cars.

  • PETG is tougher and more heat-resistant than PLA, and suits tags that live outdoors or in cars.
  • More walls and higher infill make thin tags stronger.
  • Strengthen the ring hole: more walls around it. A tag that snaps at the hole is the most common failure.
  • Use split rings or proper key rings, not jump rings, which open under load.

Print a test tag, put it on a key ring and try to break it before printing fifty.

Make numbers readable

  • High contrast: white on dark, or black on light.
  • Large digits: short codes ("12", "B4") print bigger than long ones ("Room 1204").
  • Avoid ambiguous characters in codes. "0" and "O", "1" and "I" look alike; suggest the buyer uses numbers only where possible.

Pricing a room tag order

Price per tag, dropping with quantity, plus a minimum order. Include spares in the quote as a separate line so the buyer sees the value. Our pricing guide shows how to work out the per-piece cost.

Offer a reorder price for replacement tags. A host who knows a lost tag costs little to replace will come straight back to you.

Finding hotel and rental buyers

  • Local guest houses and B&Bs: walk in with a sample tag in their style.
  • Airbnb host groups online: hosts share suppliers.
  • Property managers: one contact can mean dozens of properties.
  • Your own stays: if a place has tired tags, leave a card.

Common questions

Can I print a hotel logo on the tag? The templates take text and built-in icons, not uploaded logos. Use the property name on the second line in the property's colours.

PLA or PETG for key tags? PETG for tags that see heat, sun or rough use. PLA is fine for indoor locker and cupboard tags.

How many key tags fit in one print? It depends on the tag size and your bed. Small number tags fit many to a bed; print the whole run in as few beds as possible.
