How to sell personalised 3D prints on Etsy
Etsy buyers search for custom name gifts every day. How to set up personalised 3D print listings, collect names cleanly and turn orders round fast.
Etsy is where buyers go when they want something made for them. People search for "custom name keychain", "personalised bag tag" and "name sign for kids room" every day, and they expect to type a name at checkout. That makes it a natural fit for personalised 3D prints.
It is also crowded. Here is how to set up listings that get found, take orders without endless messages, and ship before the buyer starts asking.
Choose products that suit Etsy
Etsy buyers are usually buying a gift, often for a specific day. Products that do well:
- Name keychains in a few lettering styles. See the keychains category.
- School and bag tags for parents before term starts. See bag and school tags.
- Door name plaques for children's rooms and new homes. See signs and name plates.
- Monogram coasters in sets of four or six. See drink coasters.
- Wedding place cards in bulk. See wedding and event details.
Start with three to five listings. Learn which ones sell, then add more of what works. Our post on personalised 3D prints that sell has more product ideas.
Write titles buyers actually search
Etsy titles should start with the words a buyer types. Lead with the product and the personalisation:
- "Personalised Name Keychain, Custom Name Key Ring, 3D Printed Gift"
- "Custom School Bag Tag with Name and Class, Two Colour"
- "Kids Door Name Sign, Personalised Bedroom Plaque"
Then use all of your tags. Mix broad terms ("name keychain") with specific ones ("teacher gift keychain", "bridesmaid keychain"). Each tag can be a short phrase.
Use the personalisation box well
Etsy's personalisation field is where orders go right or wrong. Write the instructions so a buyer can't misunderstand them:
Type the name exactly as it should be printed, including capitals. For two lines, put a / between them. Example: Maya / Class 3B
Set a character limit that matches what fits on the design. A long name on a small keychain gets small; if your limit is generous, send a picture before printing.
For variations, use colour combinations ("White on navy", "Black on pink") rather than asking buyers to choose base and text colours separately. Fewer choices mean fewer mistakes.
Photos: show a real name on a real product
Your first photo decides whether a buyer clicks. Show a finished print, in hand or on a plain background, with a believable name on it. Then add:
- A photo showing size (in a hand, or next to keys or a coin).
- A photo of the colour options.
- A photo of several names, so buyers see it is made to order.
- A rendered picture of the design for the listing's alternate images, if you have one.

Send a proof before printing
For anything over a simple keychain, message the buyer a picture of their design before printing and ask them to reply "approved". In the STLmint studio, the picture comes from the same file you print, so the buyer sees exactly what they will get.
Say in your listing that you send a proof. Buyers like it, and it gives you a clear record if there is a dispute. See how to avoid misspelled names.
Set a processing time you can beat
Etsy shows buyers your processing time, and it shapes their expectations. Set it a little longer than you need, then ship early. A buyer who gets a parcel a day early leaves better reviews than one who waited the exact time promised.
Batch your Etsy orders: collect the morning's orders, make the files, print full beds and pack in the afternoon. See batch printing custom orders.
Price for Etsy's costs
Etsy charges listing, transaction and payment processing fees, and you may pay for offsite ads on some sales. Check Etsy's current fee page and include these in your price. Our pricing guide has a calculator; put Etsy's fees in the selling-costs line.
Read Etsy's rules on how items are made
Etsy asks sellers to describe accurately how their items are made, and its policies on handmade, designed and produced items have changed over time. Read the current seller policy and describe your process honestly in each listing: you print and finish every item yourself, to order, from a design you've personalised.
Check the licence of any file you sell prints of. Many free files online do not allow commercial use.
Use bulk orders for repeat buyers
Some Etsy buyers are teachers, wedding planners or offices, and they come back. When an order includes a list of names, ask for it in one message, one name per line. With the Seller plan, paste the list into Bulk order and get one print-ready file per name in a single ZIP.
Common questions
Do I need my own website to sell on Etsy? No. Etsy is a good first channel because buyers are already searching there. A website can come later.
How many listings should I start with? Three to five, each with strong photos. More listings are worth adding once you know which products sell.
Should I offer free shipping? Many sellers build postage into the price, because buyers compare total cost. Small, flat items like keychains and tags make this easy.
